ENGAGED PHILANTHROPY

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS

Three to four times a year, a few

donors to the Global Fund meet via

telephone to share their deep interest

in the Middle East and North Africa

(MENA). The members of this Field

of Interest Fund (FOIF) that focuses

on MENA discuss with program and

development staff trends and chal-

lenges facing grantees. For example,

a recent conversation featured Afifa

Dirani Arsanios, Lebanese advisor,

who described how the March 2005

political transition in Lebanon affect-

ed women.

Another FOIF is the Women’s

Media Fund. In April 2005, Dorothy

Abbott raised $14,500 for the

Women’s Media Fund through her

walk across India that commemorat-

ed Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March.

This was in addition to her regular

FOIF contribution. FOIFS enable

donors to expand connections to

grassroots activists while developing

a community with other activist

donors. Each donor pledges to make

gifts of $20,000 or more. This year,

the two Funds raised $333,445 for

the Global Fund. For more informa-

tion about FOIFs, please contact

Nicky McIntyre at 415-202-7640.

Often what might seem like a

small amount of money to us will

make a big difference in the lives

of women and their families in

other countries. For example:

IN NEPAL

helps the

NEPAL DISABLED

AND NEGLECTED WOMEN

SOCIETY

educate and train women

with disabilities, then helps them

find jobs so that they may live

independently and contribute to

their communities.

IN RWANDA

allows the

UNION FOR

THE EMANCIPATION OF

INDIGENOUS WOMEN

(Union pour

l’Emancipation de la Femme

Autochtone) to provide school

supplies and pay for school for

200 indigenous girls, daughters

of the displaced survivors of the

Rwandan genocide.

IN AFGHANISTAN

enables the

WOMEN

ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL

SERVICES ASSOCIATION

to publish and distribute Mehr,

the first women’s newsletter in

Herat.

to participate in the

BULGARIAN

GENDER RESEARCH FOUNDATION’S

training in how to win cases on

behalf of women who have been

trafficked, sexually harassed or

abused by their partners.

IN ECUADOR

GRANT GUIDELINES

The Global Fund awards grants

ranging from $500 to $20,000 to

women’s groups working on

many different issues. Priority

may be given to groups that

address emerging or unconven-

tional issues; have limited access

to other donors; are based in

especially disadvantaged countries

or regions; or serve marginalized

groups of women. Our grants

enable grantee recipients to cover

operating expenses as well as

project costs.We also make grants

that enable women’s organiza-

tions to organize or participate in

training seminars or conferences

that promote women’s human

rights.The programmatic areas in

which we fund are:

Building Peace & Ending

Gender-Based Violence

Advancing Health and Sexual &

Reproductive Rights

Expanding Civic & Political

Participation

Ensuring Economic &

Environmental Justice

Increasing Access to

Education

Fostering Social Change

Philanthropy

GRANT CRITERIA

To be considered for a grant,

your group must meet all of the

following criteria:

• It is based in a country outside

the US.We rarely fund US-

based organizations.

• It demonstrates a strong com-

mitment to women’s equality

and human rights that is clearly

reflected in its activities.

• It is a group of women working

together.We do not accept

requests from individuals.

• It is governed, directed or led

by women.Women must fill all

or most of the leadership

positions.

• It is not a government entity or

multilateral organization.

• Its sole purpose is not to gener-

ate income or to provide chari-

ty to individuals.

• It is not a political party or

elections campaign.

HOW TO APPY

The Global Fund accepts grant

requests in any language or for-

mat. Letters of inquiry or grant

applications may be handwritten

or typed, and may be sent to our

office in San Francisco by post,

fax or e-mail.

More details about our crite-

ria and an application form are

available on-line at: www.global-

fundforwomen.org.

Note: Requests to organize

or attend meetings and confer-

ences must arrive in our office no

later than eight weeks before the

event begins.

THE REVIEW PROCESS

A diverse and professional staff

reviews grant applications. Our

review process is informed by the

local knowledge and expertise of

our international advisory coun-

cil. All final decisions are made by

the Global Fund’s Board of

Directors, which reflects the

international diversity of our net-

work and includes donors, advi-

sors, activists, scholars and

grantees.

Due to the high volume of

proposals we receive, it takes up

to six months to review a

request. We accept applications

throughout the year and award

grants every three months. A

notice of receipt of application is

sent within three weeks of its

arrival.
