This is Captain’s version of baptizing the crew for crossing the “Equator” for the first time on board M.V. APL MANAGUA. Basketball game “Europe vs Asia” on board M.V. ‘ELBE TRADER’. Such activities keep the crew physically active as well as entertaining. We are always pleased to receive photos and articles from our crew sharing with us their hobbies and other moments on board like various activities they may organize for entertainment. June 2011 8th Issue 14 On Friday the 11 th of March 2011 at 2:46pm JST a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake occurred near the Northeastern coast of Japan, creating extremely destructive tsunami waves which hit Japan just minutes after the earthquake, and triggering evacuations and warnings across the Pacific Ocean. This natural disaster also caused structural damage in Northeastern Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas and a collapsed dam.. Around 4.4 million households in Northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.5 million without water. This earthquake and tsunami left thousands of people confirmed dead, injured or missing. In addition to loss of life and destruction of infrastructure, the tsunami caused a number of nuclear accidents. There were restrictions in staying within a zone around 20 kilometers from the nuclear reactors and also another restriction of 21 to 30 kilometers to remain indoors as well as a civil aviation authority, restricting 30 kilometers – no fly zone around the nuclear crisis in order to prevent planes spreading the radiation further. This subject affected a big part of the Globe. It was the most powerful known earthquake to have hit Japan and one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world overall since modern record-keeping began in 1900. June 2011 8th Issue 15 M a r i n e S t o r y A STORY IN PICTURES; CAN YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT THEY DID TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 June 2011 8th Issue 16 When the warping drum gear clutch on the windlass cracked, the crew on the M/V ‘Rosario’ thought it would be an easy job to replace it. They needed to get the warping drum off the shaft to replace the clutch. But it turned out that getting the drum off the shaft was more difficult than they expected! The warping drum was initially jacked but even with maximum pressure the drum was stuck fast to the shaft (pictures 1 – 3) so they modified the jack arrangement and welded some stronger angle bars onto the barrel for ‘extra’ pull (pictures 4-7)! Even with a bigger puller device, this still didn’t work. Then they applied the good old principles of ‘heat’ and ‘cold’ to expand the warping drum (using a blow torch) and contract the shaft using CO2 (dry ice). See (pictures 8-13). Success! The warping drum comes off the shaft in stages (pictures 14-17) and the broken clutch is removed (picture 18). The happy crew pose for a photo after the successful operation (picture 19). They say pictures speak a thousand words and this one tells how a ‘routine’ maintenance task sometimes needs resourcefulness, teamwork, some different thinking and perseverance!
