3.2 General Public Questionnaire
As it was already mentioned, this research examined public awareness of the concept of “a game” and “a role play” in teaching English speaking skills. The questionnaire was in Uzbek to get a higher response rate. Criteria such as age, sex, residence or education were not taken into account. One hundred and thirty-one respondents answered two questions. The first one – open-ended question – was related to the definition of the word “game”. Respondents were asked to explain it.
Total number of responses does not correspond with the number of respondents, because some definitions contained more expressions relevant for categorisation. The detailed results are shown in the table:

Graph 1 Describing Games

Some of the definitions show signs of using such materials; however, it is hard to prove it. Some of the respondents could be teachers or psychologists, who already know the definition of the game, some of them could be students who study pedagogy etc. In the second question, which was semi-closed, the respondents were given some options to choose from, but at the same time they could write their own answers. The question “Are games used for teaching?” offered five possible answers:

a) yes, almost in every subject
b) yes, but only in languages
c) yes, but only in science
d) no
e) other – when choosing this answer the respondents were asked to write their own ideas.
As the chart below shows, the majority of people regard games and role plays as an integral part of teaching English speaking skills in Uzbek schools. One of the respondents shared this view and wrote: He may have complained that they were not taught or explained enough such lexical or grammar item.
