This is one of the clearest expressions of the humanity o Shakespeare’s kings: 
Richard is a real man, with real worries and concerns, no longer a distant Godlike 
figure. Shakespeare man ages to create sympathy for his heroes, making them 
understand able, complex, recognizable characters. 
In a similar way, Shakespeare describes the classical history of Ancient Rome 
in the Roman plays, which also combine the historical with the tragic: Titus 
Andronicus, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus make up this 
group of plays. Like the history plays, they were all written at different times in 
Shakespeare’s career (see the table of all Shakespeare’s plays on p.34) He liked to 
return to different historical periods at different times, and it is interesting to see that 
the same historical subjects return in his early period, his middle period, and his late 
plays. 
Very often the political questions examined in the history plays and the Roman 
plays have clear links with the political situation in England at the time Shakespeare 
was writing — but he is always careful not to offend the monarch, or the earls and 
lords who financially supported his theatrical company. Many other writers at that 
time were not so careful (or clever) and were put in jail for criticizing their superiors. 
SOLILOQUIES AND STRUCTURE  
Of course, not all the heroes are good men. The opening words of Richard III 
present the evil Richard. He is the Shakespearian character most often described as 
Machiavellian, meaning someone who tricks and deceives others, after the Italian 
Renaissance political writer Machiavelli, whose works were always regarded with 
disapproval in England. Richard, as a wicked man, immediately shows his character
