GRAMMAR. USED TO

Simple Past o‘tgan zamondagi odatiy, takrorlanib turgan ish-harakatni ifodalash uchun ishlatiladi:

Last winter I spenta lot of time in the library.
O‘tgan qishda men ko‘p vaqtimni kutubxonada o‘tkazardim.
Ushbu holat uchun ko‘pincha “used + to + V” ham ishlatiladi:
Last summer I used to spend a lot of time in the library.
Last year I often used to go to the theatre.
While she was in Tashkent, she used to call on us every evening.
Used to o‘tgan zamonda uzoq davom etgan ish-harakatni yoki holatni ham ifodalaydi (ayniqsa to be, to know, to livekabi fe’llar bilan):
He used to be very strong in his youth. U yoshligida juda kuchli edi.
I used to know that man. Men u kishini bilar edim (tanir edim).
He used to live in Brighton. U Braytonda yashar edi.
Used faqat o‘tgan zamonda ishlatiladi. So‘roq shakli did yordamchi fe’li yordamida yoki usiz yasaladi. Bo‘lishsiz shakli esa did siz yasaladi:
Used you (Did you use) to take English lessons every day?
Siz har kun ingliz tili darsi olardingizmi?
He used not (usen’t, usedn’t) to have dinner at home.
U uyda ovqatlanmasdi.

Lesson 27. My home town

My Native Town
Jizzakh is a small town situated in the south of the republic of Uzbekistan. It has a population of about 150.000 people. Jizzakh was founded in XVIII on the bank of the Sangzar river.
Jizzakh came into existence as a town of chemistry. There are four large industrial enterprises here.
Every third out of 150,000 inhabitants studies. Here there are two institutes, vocational schools, academic lyceums, a lot of secondary schools and boarding schools, the Industrial college and Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute and Jizzakh Polytechnic Institute.
Jizzakh offers a wide range of social, cultural and leisure facilities such as cinema houses, cafes, restaurants, sport centers, palaces of culture and shopping.
In the centre of the town there is a central square – the Square of Youth. In the square there is a house where local authorities sit.
The town is quite modern with its five and nine-storey buildings. There are several libraries, a local museum and an art gallery here.
There are several fountains in our town. I think the most attractive one is near the musical school in the main Sharof Rashidov street. It has a lovely sculpture of a mother sitting on a large chair. Everybody jokes that Jizzakh consists of one long street (the street without the end). There is even the feature film with this very title about Jizzakh and its builders.
Not far from Jizzakh there are a lot of ancient towns Gallaaral, Zamin and Bakhmal. They are famous for their history and places of interest.
I think Jizzakh is an easy town to live in – not too big and not too small. It is a student town and a perfect place to live and study.
