Pronunciation
Topic: Pronunciation of /ae/ sound
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to pronounce words correctly with /ae/ sound
Level: Intermediate
Age 14+
Systems: pronunciation
Materials: Audio, video, handout
Lead-in (whole group, 3-4 minutes)


In this part, students will play the Odd One Out game. The teacher shows the list of words in 5 lines and each line has 3 words. The students’ task is to choose an extra word in each line that has a different sound.



  1. Cat, app, cup

  2. Fab, effect add,

  3. Clap, accurate, arrest

  4. Nap, catch, ask



Procedure:

Receptive recognition work (individual 5 minutes)



  • Teacher introduces sound /ae/ and gives handout with words after that teacher distributes handouts with several words for students, they should find the correct pronunciation

Vocabulary, ask, narrow, language, activity, about, allergy, nap, taxi, jaw, pardon, fab





  • After finishing the teacher checks answers orally with the whole class

Physical articulation: (individual, 8 minutes)





  • Students will watch a video about how to pronounce /ae/ sound correctly

  • After that, the teacher stops the video and shows how to pronounce the sound correctly

Drilling practice: (individual, 7-8 minutes)



  • Teacher gives the word’s pronunciation, where students should guess the word by reading the pronunciation.




  • /ˈækʃ(ə)n/, /riˈækʃ(ə)n/, /ˈæŋɡri/,
    /ˈæp(ə)l/, /ˈæntənɪm/,/bæd/

  • After they finished, they check together with the whole class

Controlled practice: (group work, 10 minutes)

  • Teacher gives handouts and students have to connect with line words that have /aɪ/ sound

  • Once they finished, the teacher checks their tasks.

Freer practice: (individual 7-8 minutes)





  • Students should write a mini essay (7-10 sentences) on the topic “My daily routine”

  • After they finish writing, the teacher asks them to read their work in front of the class.

  • For those students who are listening, their task is to count the words which have /aɪ/ sound.
