Using Make It Stick strategies to succeed in a college course
While taking the course Statistics 2500, I used four strategies from Peter C. Brown’s Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning, to enhance my learning experience in the class and allow me to obtain a higher grade. Using these methods through tools like Quizlet, flashcards, and textbooks increases retention on the material being taught and makes the semester course more enjoyable. When I took data over the amount of time spent studying the Quizlet flashcards resulting in the quiz scores, I found that there was a correlation. Using this data I believe that the more time you spend studying flashcards with questions derived from the course’s textbook, the higher the quiz score. Using this, I believe that by allowing yourself enough time to study the flashcards with ample time between, you can succeed in this course.

When I signed up for the course Statistics 2500 here at Mizzou, I was mainly taking the course because it was a requirement for a degree in information technology, which I soon declared for. I wanted general knowledge in the areas taught in statistics, but also a familiarity with Microsoft Excel, which was used frequently in the class. As I started to get acclimated to the course, I soon realized that a possible minor in statistics may be something I would want to do in the future. The teacher was informative, the course subjects were engaging, and most importantly, the teaching assistants were really easy to contact. With all of these advantages, I began to make a schedule on how I would not only succeed in the class, but excel above others. By using resources like quizlet, flashcards, textbooks, and teaching assistants, I didn't have to worry about losing track of the subjects we were covering in the class. In this steady progression over the course of the semester, I had set myself up with a very easy last week of the semester. Using these techniques in this course not only helps the semester go quicker, but the workload doesn't seem as much as it may be.
