8.3 NATURE
AND
ORIGINS
OF STEREOTYPING :
From where does stereotype and prejudice emerge? Why do
they exist? Why do people even today carry stereotypes leading to
prejudice and discrimination? There are many possible sources
from where this stems.
1. Direct inter-group conflict (competition as a source of
Prejudice) : It is sad but true that people want and value most
good jobs, nice homes, high status, which is always in short
supply. This fact serves as the oldest explanation for
stereotypes and prejudice. This is the realistic conflict theory,
the view that prejudice stems form direct competition between
various social groups over valued commodities and
opportunities.
