INTRODUCTION


This book is intended to assist the learner to become more familiar with the expressions used in everyday communication, and so help them achieve the goal of fluency. It presents a series of 30 specially written passages which are based on the kind of realistic conversations which might take place in everyday life. The passages are modern, interesting and lively. Passages can, of course, convey the style and language of conversations much more vividly than individual example sentences can.


The passages contain the kind of informal, sometimes idiomatic or slang expressions associated with such conversation. These expressions are printed in bold type in order to bring them to the attention of the learner.
Immediately following each passage is an explanation section. This section defines or explains each of the expressions given in bold type in the passage. It also gives two example sentences, printed in italic type, to give students more usage guidance. Where relevant, further language help has been given. This additional help might, for example, take the form of another expression which is used in a similar way.
Also, they learn collocations that will expand their vocabulary and help their English sound more natural. Collocations are the typical or common combinations of words we use together. I suggest completing one lesson in this book per day, but of course the students can study at their own pace. They should always do the tasks after each lesson. This is essential to review and practice what you have learned! The answers are at the end of the book. At the end of each audio file, there is an opportunity for students to listen to and repeat the collocations. If the students are really short on time, they can skip that part – but it is nice for practicing their pronunciation, as well as reinforcing the phrase in their memory.
