INTRОDUCTIОN

Before, during, and after World War I, significant movements in poetry emerged, and the turbulent period that followed left its mark on a wide range of books. The leading authors of the period tended toward radical technical
experiments in drama, poetry, and fiction, which were among the period's most varied literary forms.
A new drama that arose in rebellion against the glib commercial stage was the most experimental form of writing in the 19th century, even though drama had not yet become a major art form. Americans traveling through Europe in the early 20th century came across a vital and thriving theater; When they got back to their homes, some of them got involved in starting the Little Theatre movement all over the country. Playwrights experimented with dramatic forms and production methods free of commercial constraints. Over time, producers, actors, and dramatists with training in college classrooms and community playhouses emerged. The Washington Square Players, which were established in 1915 and went on to form the Theatre Guild, produced their first production in 1919, is one example of a Little Theatre group that went on to become a commercial producer. The drama that resulted had a new seriousness and maturity, as well as an innovative spirit.
This movement produced Eugene O'Neill, the most admired poet of the time. Prior to the commercial production of his plays, he collaborated with the Provincetown Players. The breadth of his plays was remarkable. Beyond the Horizon, which was first performed in 1920, Anna Christie, which was first performed in 211, Desire Under the Elms, which was first performed in 244, and The Iceman Cometh, which was first performed in 1946, were all naturalistic works. On the other hand, The Emperor Jones, which was first performed in 1920, and The Hairy Ape, which was first performed in 222, made use of the expressionist techniques that were developed in German drama between the years 1914 and 1924. In Strange Interlude (1928), he used a stream-of-consciousness style of psychological monologue, and in Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), he combined myth, family drama, and psychological analysis.
