1.2.1. VERBS TO BE, TO DO, TO HAVE

These verbs can perform various functions in the sentence: semantic verb, modal verb, auxiliary verb in the analytic forms of the predicate (conveys only the grammatical meaning with which the semantic verb is translated), the verb - connectives (to be) in a compound noun predicate (a noun, a pronoun, an adjective, a numeral, an infinitive, a gerund are usually not translated in the

present tense), an amplifying verb and a substitute verb (to do). It is important to correctly identify the form and function of the verb:

The Verb to be

−to be - semantic (translates to be, appear, exist, be, equal): Your surgeon is the first line of defense.

−to be - auxiliary: Liver disease is also known as hepatic disease. The surgeon is examining his patient carefully.
−to be - conjugated verb: Heart disease is usually preventable.
−to be - modal: Knowledge of certain basic principles is surely required if therapy is to be understood.

The Verb to do

The verb to do is another common verb in English. It can be used as an auxiliary and a main verb. It is often used in questions.

−to do - semantic: They do the task promptly.
−to do - auxiliary (in interrogative and negative forms of the verb): Do not forget that regular physical exercises are the key moment of surgical prophylaxis.
−to do - amplifier: Surgery do play a role in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea. −to do - deputy: Self cure acrylic materials contain more residual monomer after polymerization than do heat-cure materials after processing.

The Verb to have

−to have - semantic: I have a stomachache.

−to have (+ Communion II )
-auxiliary: I have suggested that.. It has been suggested that..
−to have to do - modal: They had to operate on him immediately.
