4. EXPRESSION OF MODALITY

In the language of scientific literature there is a large group of verbs that express not the action, but the attitude of the speaker or writer to this action.
Modal verbs and their equivalents, combined with any form of the infinitive of the semantic verb, express the possibility, probability or necessity of action. Modal verbs must, may (might) present some difficulty in translation in combination with a perfect infinitive. This design expresses a significant degree of confidence in the commission of an action related to the past:
e.g. They should have paid more attention to the possible complications. More attention should be paid to possible complications.
