SEMINAR 15 : Translation problems in Phraseology
Topic for discussion:

  • The basic problems of translation as a science

  • Specific features of phraseological units complicating their adequate translation

  • Translation strategies and techniques in phraseology

  • Notions of equivalents, analogues, clichés, translation loans, etc.

  • False friends of translators

  • Translation of idiomatic, ideophaseomatic and phraseomatic expressions

Task 1: Answer the following question

  1. What do we call a language from which we translate texts? To which we translate the text?

Source Language and Target Language

  1. What problems facing a translator do you know?

There are some challenges for ltranslators while translating a text
Language Structure. The challenge comes when the language is complex. ...
Culture. Many of the spoken dialects are woven into many languages, which can affect content. ...
Compound words. ...
Missing terms. ...
Words with multiple meanings

  1. Which aspect of the translation of idioms is the most problematic?

The most problematic factor of translation is the transference of phraseological units.

  1. What do you understand as “adequacy” of translation and how can this be reached?

Adequacy is thus the choice of linguistic signs in relation to the purpose of the translation (though the purpose of the translation may not be that of the source text).

  1. Why are PhUs called ‘frozen patterns of language’?

Mona Baker in her book “In Other Words ” states that idioms are frozen patterns of language which allow little or no variation and gives five conditions for this:

  1. The order of the words cannot be changed

  2. The words in an idiom cannot be omitted

  3. There are not extra words which can be added to an idiom

  4. No words in an idiom can be replaced by another word

  5. The grammatical structures of an idiom also cannot be changed

  1. What are basic techniques for translation of idioms?

1)Using an idiom of similar meaning and form
2)Using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form
3)Translation by Paraphrasis
4)Translation by Omission
5)Literal Translation
