5. High Blood Pressure
People who like to stay up late on weekends may want to keep an eye on
blood pressure. If you sleep in on the weekends or go to bed at different
times every night, you may be more likely to have high blood pressure
(hypertension).
High blood pressure is a common condition that happens when the force of
the blood against the artery walls is too high. It can lead to serious other
health conditions, so it's important to keep yours managed.
One way to help keep your blood pressure within a healthy range is to keep
a consistent sleep routine. This means going to bed and waking up at about
the same time every day, regardless of weekday or weekend.
Hypertension can also be caused by lifestyle patterns, such as unhealthful
eating or lack of exercise. Stress
—both physiological and psychological—
may play a big role, as well. Adopt healthy habits to help keep your blood
pressure low.
6. Increased Alcohol and Tobacco Use
A late-night lifestyle often goes hand-in-hand with other unhealthful
behaviors. A 2020 study in Chronobiology International found that young
people who prefer to stay up late are more impulsive than their peers who
go to bed earlier, which makes them more likely to drink alcohol and smoke.
Additionally, a July 2021 study published in Genes linked evening
chronotypes with increased beer intake.
Of course, that's not true for all late chronotypes, and there's also no
evidence that staying up late actually leads to these behaviors. What could

also be happening is these unhealthy behaviors may be keeping you from
getting a good night's rest.
7. Lack of Motivation To Workout
If you've ever had a short night of sleep and not been in the mood to work
out the next day, you're not alone.
There is evidence that the longer you sleep, the more vigorous you'll
exercise the next day. Strangely though, if you spend a lot of time doing
vigorous exercise, you might get the less sleep the next night.
Getting up early and working out first thing may have its advantages: A
morning workout can help you make better wellness choices all day, and
you may even lose more weight. A 2019 study found people who exercised
earlier in the day (at least before noon) lost "significantly more weight" than
people who exercised later in the day, past 3 p.m.
Don't fret if mornings don't work for your fitness schedule. Most fitness
experts agree that the best time of day to exercise is different for everyone.
To make exercise habit, find the time of day that works best for you and
stick with an activity you enjoy.
