It explores how readers interact with the language of texts, i.e. how we understand and are affected by texts when we read them. Stylistics is the study of linguistic style in texts . It helps to explain how politicians mislead; how novelists and poets move their readers; how advertisers persuade us to buy their products and how the media influence public opinion. Onomatopoeia as a stylistic device Onomatopoeia is one way a poet can create sounds in a poem. An onomatopoeia is a word that actually looks like the sound it makes, and we can almost hear those sounds as we read. Here are some words that are used as examples of onomatopoeia: slam, splash, bam, babble, warble, gurgle, mumble, and belch . Onomatopoeia is a literary device that uses the letter sounds of a word to imitate the natural sound emitted from an object or action . Some onomatopoeia examples include the words boing, gargle, clap, zap, and pitter-patter . When these words are used in context, you can almost hear what they describe: the boing of a spring, the clap of chalkboard erasers, and the pitter-patter of rain falling on the pavement like tiny footsteps. What are Simile and Metaphor? Say in examples A simile is a comparison between two things that uses the word like or as: Her smile is as bright as sunshine . A metaphor is a direct comparison between two things that does not use like or as: Her smile is sunshine. A simile makes a comparison using the words “like” or “as.” Example: The concert was so crowded, it felt like a million people were there . A metaphor makes the comparison directly, substituting one thing for another. Example: That test was a killer. |
