Stylistics is generally considered as 
the study of literary discourse from a linguistic orientation
(e.g. lexis, syntax, 
sound patterns, semantics, etc). It explores how readers interact with the language of texts, i.e. how we 
understand and are affected by texts when we read them. Stylistics is 
the study of linguistic style in texts
. It helps 
to explain how politicians mislead; how novelists and poets move their readers; how advertisers persuade us to 
buy their products and how the media influence public opinion. 
Onomatopoeia as a stylistic device 
Onomatopoeia is one way a poet can create sounds in a poem. An onomatopoeia is a word that actually looks like 
the sound it makes, and we can almost hear those sounds as we read. Here are some words that are used as 
examples of onomatopoeia: 
slam, splash, bam, babble, warble, gurgle, mumble, and belch
.
