The boy from Brazil
Ronaldo de Lima was born on September 22nd, 1976. He grew up in a poor working-class district in Rio de Janeiro, with his parents and brother
and sister. At a very early age Ronaldo had a passion for football. He was only 14 years old when he joined his first team. However, his first tryout for a professional team was a disaster. Ronaldo was so poor that he couldn’t afford the bus fare to the football grounds. As a result he missed the tryout, and the team lost one of the world’s best players. In the end he played for a club called Cruzeiro where he scored 58 goals in 60 games!
Since then Ronaldo’s career has been one success after another. When he was 17, Ronaldo won a place on Brazil’s 1994 World Cup team. Then in 1998 he played for Brazil again, this time in
France. Playing in the World Cup was an exciting experience for Ronaldo. In the match against Morocco, he promised his family he’d score a
goal. He did. It was one of the best in the competition and Ronaldo was voted the Best Player at World Cup 98.
So after so much success, what’s important for Ronaldo? ‘Scoring goals is everything to me,’ he says. ‘Nothing gives me more pleasure.’
