Amazon adventure
Life isn’t easy for a modern-day explorer. In the twentieth century man climbed the biggest mountains, reached the North and South Poles
and walked on the moon. Nowadays, the biggest challenge for young explorers is to find
something different and new. Pete Santo found a new challenge in the Amazon.
In August last year 28-year-old Pete Santo left his home in London and travelled to Peru. Once
there he began a 5,000-mile journey down the Amazon river – but not by boat. Pete became the first person to swim the length of the Amazon river.
The Amazon is the largest river in the world, and is the second longest after the Nile. Pete swam down the river with the help of a small raft. At
one point he spent ten days in the water. ‘I’m so tired!’ he wrote in his diary. ‘I’m feeling very sleepy and have a heavy head. But I’ve got this
far, I can’t give up now. I’m going to continue.’
There were other problems too. ‘I had to find
food in the wild,’ he explains. ‘I didn’t take any food with me, so I lived off bananas and fish. Sometimes I tried new fruit, but I always ate a small amount first. I had to be careful as some
fruit is very poisonous.’
After weeks of swimming, Pete arrived safely in Samao Grande, the end of his journey. There
were celebrations in the town when he arrived,
but Pete was already thinking of his next adventure. ‘I love exploring and I’m always looking for a new challenge,’ he explains. ‘Next year I want to explore the world’s deepest
canyon.’ And he’s going to be the first person to
do it – of course!
