At first glance the Lunar Hilton looks like every other luxurious hotel. But instead of being in Torremolinos, this hotel will be on the moon.
To many people, holidays on the moon belong to the world of science fiction. But is the idea so far-fetched? The recent discovery of ice on the moon, along with technological advances, means that holidays there are a definite possibility. Scientists say that the ice will provide drinking water and could also fill an artificial sea. Now companies
like the Hilton International are designing special space hotels in the race to be the first hotel on the moon. Some people predict that we will be able
to book moon holidays within the next fifty
years. But just how popular will these holidays
be? We asked two experts for their opinions.
‘If people have the opportunity to visit the moon, they’ll go there,’ says Professor Richard Ellis of Cambridge University. ‘Holidays on the moon
will be the next great advance. I believe there will be a huge demand for them.’
However, Professor John Peacock disagrees. ‘It
cost billions of dollars to put man on the moon in the 1960s,’ he says. ‘And in my opinion, space travel won’t get any cheaper. If the moon hotel costs a fortune, people won’t go.’
