again in a piece of writing or speech. Writers of all kinds use repetition, but it is
particularly popular in oration and spoken word, where a listener's attention might
be more limited.
Repetition is a figure of speech that shows the logical emphasis that is
necessary to attract a reader’s attention on the key-word or a key-phrase of the text. It
implies repeating sounds, words, expressions and clauses in a certain succession
or even with no particular placement of the words, in order to provide emphasis.
There is no restriction in using repetition but too much repetition can be dull and
even spoil its stylistic effect.
According to different linguists’ opinion repetition is not a stylistic device
if it shows the excited state of mind of the speaker.
“Stop!"—she cried, "Don't tell me! I don't want to hear, I don't want to hear
what you've come for, and I don't want to hear."
(J. Galsworthy)
Repetition as a stylistic device
1. Anaphora – the beginning of several successive sentences clauses phrases is
repeated.

192
Function: to emphasize the repeated unit or to create the background for non-
repeated unit, this in this way becomes foreground.
2. Epiphora – the end is repeated. Function: to stress the final words of utterance
or to serve as a background.
3. Framee(obraamlenie) – the beginning of the sentence is repeated in the end.
Thus forming the frame for the non-repeated part. Function: to clarify the notion
mentioned in the beginning of the sentence.
4. Anadiplosis – the end of the 1-st sentence is repeated in the beginning of the
following one. Function: to show the interaction of different parts of a text.
5. Chain repetition- several successive anadiplosis. Function: to create the effect
of smoothly developing logical reasoning or some gradual changes.
Ordinary (lexical) repetition as an expressive means:
There bare no recognized patterns.
Functions: 1) to characterize the person through his speech
2) to convey & emphasize the emotional state of the speaker
3) to emphasize some ideas or key-word
4) to attract & to fix the attention of the reader
5) to have some time for thinking over
6)to find the most precise words
7) to clarify something
In conclusion it can be said that apart from the existing type of
repetition are singled out two new types of repetition – scattered repetition
and thematic repetition. These types of repetitions have the same emotional
loading as others and sometimes they can cause even stronger emotions, as
they are either “scattered” or “hidden” and the emotions arise subconsciously.
