The endocrine system
The endocrine system is the body’s regulator. It is a group of body parts that uses hormones to control some of the body’s actions. The hormones of the endocrine system work in the background. When your nervous system makes your arms move or your head turn, you know that, this is the action you want to happen. Hormone action, though, takes place without your being aware of it. The workers of the endocrine system are eight glands. 1 _______________may be the most important gland in the endocrine system. It does many jobs to control body actions. It does so many, in fact, that it is often called the "master gland." The pituitary is controlled in part by the brain stem.2 ____________gland is found in the throat, it releases the hormone that controls how fast the body uses food for energy. The thyroid is controlled by the pituitary. 3____________sit on top of the kidneys. They are important because they control the stress response and the amount of salt and water in the body.
The 4 ___________are in the pancreas. There are many of these groups
of cells throughout that organ. They are important in the control of sugar in the blood.
5___________are the glands in the female reproductive system. The 6 _______are the glands in the male reproductive system.
The glands in the endocrine system can cause problems when they do not work correctly. The pituitary gland. If it releases too much growth hormone, a condition called 7_______occurs and the person becomes very tall. If the pituitary releases too little growth hormone, the person will be very small. A lack of hormone from thyroid during the growth years causes cretinism. The person growth little and may have some mental retardation. If the diet does not have enough iodine, the thyroid enlarges and the throat swells. This produces the condition known as 8 _______.
The most common problem with hormones is 9_______. This is a condition in which, the body cannot properly use food to make energy. Either the islets of Langerhans do not make enough insulin or insulin is released but not used properly. Someone with diabetes must watch his or her diet carefully and may need daily dose of insulin.
The way to care for your endocrine system is to have overall good health. Eating balanced diet is very important. Some glands in this system need to get enough of certain nutrients to work correctly. The hormone released by the thyroid, for instance, needs iodine. This mineral, then, must be part of your diet. This kind of care is especially important in teen years because the body is growing and changing so much.
