EMBEDDED SENTENCE
An embedded sentence is a question sentence which is in a question or positive sentence.
In order to embed special questions, we use the following structure:
S + V + QUESTION WORD + S + V + C + M
e.g. Where do you live? He is asking where I live?
When do you bring your sister? She is asking when I bring my sister.
How did you pass to Foundation 2?
Our teacher is wondering how we passed to Foundation2?
Who was your first teacher? My friend is asking who my first teacher was.
Which student has collected the highest score in your group?
They are asking which student collected the highest score in our group.
What is your profession? He is asking what my profession is.
What is your name? She is asking what your name is.
Can you tell where you live. Can you tell what your name is
In order to embed general questions we use the following structure;
S + V + IF / WHETHER + S + V + C + M
e.g. Is it your pen? Sara is asking if / whether it is my pen.
Did you understand the rule? The teacher is asking whether / if we understood rule.
Can you come to the lesson on time? He is asking whether / if we can come to the lesson.
Do I have to get rid of all my minuses? Dilshoda is wondering whether / if she has to get rid of her minuses.
Are the buildings going to be built soon? He is asking whether / if the buildings are going to be built soon.
If the first part of Embedded sentence is in the past tense the question sentence should be changed to one tense back. d
e.g. Where are you? I was asking them where they were.
Can you help us? They asked whether / if we could help them.
Have you finished your task? I asked him whether he had finished his task.
If both the first part of an embedded sentence and the question part is also in the Past tense, we don’t have to change it.
e.g. Were you doing lessons?
My mum asked whether / If I was doing my lessons.
Did you see Suzy?
Tom was questioned whether he saw Suzy.
Was the yard swept by Tom?
Tom’s parents wondered whether the yard swept by Tom.
