How to Experience Oneness
No one can force y o u into a state of oneness. It can only be expe- rienced by conscious choice. This choice includes both a mental side and an emotional side. The mental choice involves deciding to view the world through the lens of interconnectedness, to see yourself as part of a larger body, and to accept the n e w level of responsibility that arises from that perspective. The emotional choice is to deliberately tune in to this ever-present connection and to experience it as joy. In order to truly master oneness, both the mental and the emotional sides must be integrated. You must recognize the truth of oneness, as well as feel your loving connectedness to others. If y o u only have the mental side, you'll understand and agree with the logic of oneness, but y o u w o n ' t really grasp it intuitively. You'll lack the drive to turn your realizations into direct action. If y o u only have the emotional side, you'll intuitively sense that w e ' r e all connected on some level, but you'll lack a sensible model of reality in which your intuitive understanding can be 78 Oneness explained. You'll feel connected and joyful at times, but you'll have a hard time integrating that into all parts of your life. W h e n developing a sense of oneness, it's helpful to begin by focus- ing on either the mental or the emotional side, depending on w h e t h e r y o u favor your logic or intuition. Start with whichever one y o u prefer, and then use your progress as leverage to explore the other side. You can even switch back and forth in order to gradually elevate both as- pects. I began with the mental side of oneness. Initially, I had no real e m o - tional sense of our interconnectedness, but I could see clearly enough that the world w o u l d be vastly improved if more people choose to cooperate instead of c o m p e t e . I could logically see that nonviolence was more intelligent than violence. I could see that fairness w a s a bet- ter approach than prejudice. However, I didn't really feel the truth of this in my gut. W h e n I made decisions very consciously, I could get myself to act in accordance with oneness, but it took a lot of effort to think that way, and it didn't feel natural to m e . Only w h e n I started experiencing the emotional side did I finally grasp it on an intuitive level. At first, the responsibility that a c c o m p a - nied this feeling seemed overwhelming, but as I continued to tune in and feel the connectedness directly, it helped me experience oneness in a much more natural and nonthreatening manner.
