O n e of the best w a y s to increase your mind's predictive accuracy is through direct testing. Instead of merely learning from others, go out and create your o w n knowledge. Don't blindly follow the advice of experts. Find out w h a t works best for y o u by conducting personal experiments. Everyone is different, so w h a t works for y o u may not be the same as w h a t works for everyone else. 97 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE W h e n e v e r y o u c o m e up with a n e w idea for increasing your ef- fectiveness, test it to see w h a t effect it has. D o n ' t dismiss any ideas until y o u ' v e actually tried t h e m . T h e ongoing practice of conducting experiments will condition y o u to be more productive because you'll always be on the lookout for w a y s to improve. I've conducted some incredibly strange experiments at times, sev- eral of t h e m d o c u m e n t e d on my Website. For example, in late 2005 I decided to see if I could successfully adapt to polyphasic sleep. Poly- phasic sleep has several variations, but the form I tested was to sleep only 20 minutes at a time, o n c e every four hours, around the clock. That's six naps every 24 hours, for a total of 2 hours of sleep per day. M o s t people w h o attempt polyphasic sleep c a n ' t adapt and give up within the first few days, but after nearly a w e e k of brutal sleep depri- vation, I was finally able to adapt. It was a fascinating experience that c h a n g e d my understanding of time, but the downside w a s that I fell out of sync with the rest of the w o r l d . I m a n a g e d to keep it up for five a n d a half months before eventually returning to monophasic sleep, mainly for social reasons. It was o n e of the most memorable and pro- ductive times of my life, but it only happened because I decided to dive in and test it instead of merely reading about it. You don't have to conduct experiments as severe as polyphasic sleep, but you'll surely benefit by conducting your o w n growth trials. Are y o u more productive while listening to music, or do y o u prefer total silence? W h a t style of clothing makes y o u look and feel your best? Does your significant other respond best to verbal, written, or kinesthetic expressions of affection? W h a t effects do y o u notice in your body after eating different types of foods? You can spend count- less hours absorbing advice from so-called experts, or y o u can run a quick test and discover the answers for yourself. For every expert w h o tells y o u one thing, you'll find someone else w h o says the opposite. W h a t ' s the best diet, spiritual practice, or form of investing? You have to make these determinations for yourself. It's fine to consult with experts, but in all cases y o u ' r e the final authority. • • 98 Authority You're the c o m m a n d e r in chief of your life. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You can try to give your power a w a y and pre- tend to be powerless, but the undeniable truth is that y o u ' r e still in c o m m a n d . G e t in touch with what's most important to y o u in life. If y o u felt responsible for the entire world, w h a t w o u l d y o u w a n t to c h a n g e first? If y o u decided to b e c o m e an expert at something, w h a t w o u l d that be? W h a t can y o u say about the great spirit that dwells inside y o u , waiting for the opportunity to express itself through purposeful a c - tion? W h a t really matters to y o u ? Even as y o u learn to embrace your authority, you'll still encounter situations w h e r e aligning yourself with truth and power isn't e n o u g h .
