The natives of New England are often very uncommunicative. A traveller engaged a certain villager, Gabriel Gates by name, in the following conversation:

“Who owns this house?”, he asked.
“Moggs”, replied Gates.
“What in the world is it built on?”
“Logs”, answered Gates.
“Any animals hereabouts?”
“Frogs”, said Gates.
“What sort of soil have you?”
“Bogs,” said Gates.
“What do you live on chiefly?”
“Hogs”, said Gates.
“Have you any friends?”

Their tails are long,

And no one seems
To like them much.
But I think mice
Are nice.

Its fleece was white as snow;

It followed her to school one day,

That was against the rule:
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,

But still it lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.

-Why does the lamb love Mary so?

The eager children cry;
-Cause Mary loves the lamb, you know,
The teacher did reply.
