In learning mathematics, the significance of problem-solving comes from the belief that mathematics is primarily about reasoning, not memorization. Problem-solving enables students to establish understanding and explain the processes used to arrive at solutions, rather than to recall and apply a set of procedures. Through problem solving, students gain a broader understanding of mathematical concepts, become more interested and appreciate the importance and usefulness of mathematics ( Wu and Zhang 2006). Further, such use of effective strategies also helps students with mathematics difficulties develop their independence and confidence (Steel, 2002). For students with mathematics difficulties who have deficits in visual discrimination and memory, all instructional components should be clearly presented with appropriate signals (e.g., titles and headings) and consistently placed on the same part of the screen throughout the program (Bley & Thornton, 2001; Higgins et al., 2000). In the 21st century, the use of digital throughout teaching mathematical problem solving became a must. In addition to text material, multiple resources are needed to stimulate prior learning. In the context of the new knowledge, the stimulated prior knowledge can be encoded in the memory of the students; and then exploration can be advanced on the problem posed. Students will devise conjectures while investigating the problem, and then validate and prove the conjectures that will eventually provide the solution (Motshidisi Masilo, 2020).
