Forest reserves
Vast forest reserves still also exist in the tropics, especially in the Amazon Valley, Southeast Asia, and Central Africa. Inaccessibility and economic factors have until recently protected these areas from destruction, but the more accessible forests have now vanished or have been selectively depleted of the most valuable species. The rate of clearing tropical forests has accelerated in the past decade or so to the point that many fear that they will all disappear by the end of the century. Brazil's forests once covered 80 percent of the country; by 1965 they had been reduced to 58 percent. Vast stretches of the Amazon forest are now being cleared for a transcontinental highway. Much of the best quality forest has been cut to clear land for agriculture and for fuel. Tropical forests have also been exploited for lumber. The mahogany of Haiti, for example, has long since disappeared and that of Honduras is nearly gone.

The management of the forests
The management would include preservation of trees of mixed species and ages as much as possible to discourage losses from pests, disease, and fire; logging on a long-term rotation basis for the best quality of lumber; reforestation and careful protection of the soil. Lumbering companies in the US have not always strictly adhered to these principles with the result that their abuses have been loudly protested by conservation groups.
The significance of forests is not restricted to timber use. They are an important geographical and ecological factor. They protect the soil and water resources better than the most excellent artificial measures. Forests prevent soil erosion, retain surface waters, making them clean and still, and contribute to an increase in ground waters. In this respect, watershed forests are a kind of reservoir for useful moisture. Just the fact that forests regulate the flow of rivers, prevent their pollution and their being clogged by silt, prevent floods or reduce them in size, makes them extremely valuable.
