American Dream cont'd - Bateman kills an extortionate number of people throughout the novel, and kills every part of the American Dream with it- except for those capitalist features- the money and job. It could therefore be argued that rather than exploring a supernatural gothic story, Ellis is demonstrating the horror of capitalism and what the quest of maintaining the American Dream can lead to. This is shown when Bateman kills Paul Allen, another high achiever of the American Dream, due to his jealousy.
Twilight -The Twilight series fits into the category of the modern Gothic because it presents traditional Gothic elements in a modern setting. Edward puts Bella in dangerous situations by exposing her to a world of vampires who yearn to imbibe her blood. Bella begins to rely on him to save her from the horrors of the Gothic world. Thus, she labels herself as the “damsel in distress” and suggests that she is in need of Edward's protection.
Terror and horror -
Stepehen King -Ann Radcliffe describes the difference between horror and terror:
She argued that terror is characterized by "obscurity" or indeterminacy in its treatment of potentially horrible events while horror nearly annihilates" the reader's responsive capacity with its unambiguous displays of atrocity
Stephen King is known as one of the greatest horror and Gothic writers of our time. The reason for this is his ability to fuse the Gothic elements created by stories such as Dracula or Frankenstein and today’s horror.
One of his greater talents is being able to use Gothic element like vampires and make us see them in a different light. King's unique way of writing with his old Gothic ideals, new horror ideas, and use of realistic settings help to put a new spin on what we conceive as Gothic story.
Key elements of Modern Gothic literature
The supernatural
• Horror
• The change in setting
Role of women
Gothic novels are essentially novels of terror or horror. The atmosphere or mood of the novel is usually dark and threatening. Something horrible could happen at any moment. The setting helps to establish this threatening mood. In the Harry Potter books, Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, the Riddle House, the graveyard, Grimmauld Place, and the labyrinth from the Triwizard Tournament all evoke the feeling of menace and darkness common to Gothic novels.
The Supernatural- Ghosts, haunted castles, and seemingly magical events abound in Gothic tales. Tzvetan Todorov separates the supernatural occurrences in the Gothic novel into two types. With “the supernatural explained” events are rationally explained as not supernatural at the end of the novel, and in “the supernatural accepted” events appear to be actually supernatural.
