Literature review
“The goal of all readers should be to understand what they read” (Teele.2004.p,92)
Research shows good readers are actively involved with the text, and they are aware of the process they use to understand what they read. Teachers can help improve learners comprehension through instruction of reading strategies. Predicting, making connection, visualizing, conferring, questioning and summarizing are strategies by naming the strategy and how it should be used, modeling through think-aloud process, group practice, partner practice and independent use of the strategy.
Predicting
Good readers have a purpose of reading. One strategy for improving reading skill is predicting, which help the reader set a purpose for their reading. These strategy also allows for more learners interaction, which increases learners interest and improves their understanding of the text . Without this aspect of the prediction process, it becomes meaningless to improving the learners reading skills such as comprehension.
Making connections
Research has shown that good readers use their experiences and knowledge to make predictions and formulate ideas as they read(Block,John.2004). This strategy could be instructed by making comparisons , teaching modeling, using graphic organizers, think-pair-share, and teacher qustioning.
Reading is a very important skill that must be possessed by learners. It would help them in the school. According to Tarigann (2008.7)reading is a process to get message of the writer through words or written language.
While Leu (1997:9) states the reading is a developmental interactive and global process involving learned skills. The process specifically incorporates and individual’s linguistic knowledge, and can be both positively and negatively influenced by non linguistic internal and external variables or factors.
