NEW JOB TITLES IN THE MODERN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Everybody knows that it is very important to choose the right occupation. But how do we choose the right occupation and never regret afterwards? One of the most important things is to find out more about the wide choice of professions. It is necessary to start from the names of different jobs. But there are about 5 billion jobs in the world, besides, some jobs may have different names, but mean the same things.
How is all this reflected in the modern English language? Today’s job titles are quite a difficult area to understand because of numerous new, creative or fancy job titles. Some job titles are completely new. It is so because new professions are appearing every year. This happens because of the rapid scientific and technological progress. But people nowadays also tend to make their job titles sound more interesting, complicated and “fancy”: app developer, logistician, merchandiser, public relations (РR) manager or information technology (IT) manager. What is more, very often their meaning after such changes becomes unclear or totally ununderstandable: goods movement specialist (for a loader), maintenance engineer or building superintendent (for a janitor). This makes it difficult or even impossible to process certain new job titles in people’s resumes with the help of special computer programmes or online.
This fact makes the task of sorting out different job titles even more important. First of all, it will help those who are thinking about their future profession, i.e. teenagers and young people. Secondly, it will be helpful to specialists who deal with job applications. Thirdly, it will assist translators and interpreters in their work.
These are the reasons why we decided to look into new, creative and fancy job titles, to study their functions, structure and meaning.
The research uses a database of 78 new job titles obtained from publicly available sources in the Internet (period of limitation 2012–2016).
The choice was based on several lists of new job titles placed in the Internet as examples of a new trend in job titles. According to the materials of the articles, all the new job titles gathered there were purely authentic. They were found in actual resumes and might be considered the proper material for our research.
We failed to find any attempts to look into the new job titles from a linguistic point of view. So the data on functions of these new job titles in the language, their structure and meaning, which are contained in our research, may be considered a novelty.
The appearance of new job titles is caused by 1) creating new jobs, 2) quality changes in the content of old jobs and 3) peoples’ desire to have a more sophisticated job title.
A desire to change common job titles for fancy ones without objective reasons is caused by 1) a wish to raise the prestige and self-importance: receptionist – administrative assistant, 2) a wish to hide the “dirty” or “dishonourable” professions behind neutral or “fancy” job titles, e.g. doorman instead of bouncer, or waste removal engineer instead of garbage collector, and 3) a wish to improve the chances of getting a new job by impressing potential employers at an early stage with an unusual or creative job title in the resume, like loss prevention officer instead of security guard and even knowledge navigator instead of teacher.
Fancy job titles present significant problems to recruiters and human resources officials as they as a rule are difficult to understand. What is more, Applicant Tracking Systems used by large companies discard resumes containing fancy job titles. Trying to solve the problem of unclear and fancy job titles large companies have introduced recruitment based on skill sets rather than job titles.
The structural analysis shows the following types of fancy job titles: a) single-noun, binary and multi-word (up to three) fancy job titles; b) nouns within a job title can be modified by other nouns, adjectives or participles; c) there are several structural models of compound nouns presenting job titles: N+N(+N) – media distribution executive, A+N(+N) – social media guru, P+N(+N) – coordinating board captain.
The semantic analysis shows that “fancy words” are added to job titles instead of some common job terms, like “manager”, “director”, “specialist” and others. There is a certain correspondence in meaning between “fancy words” and common job terms, like “manager”, “director”, “specialist” and others. The “fancy words” replace mostly senior positions or administrative posts: adventurer – specialist/expert; cheerleader – coordinator; dynamo – coordinator; guru – expert; hero – specialist/expert; magician – expert/technician.
The “fancy” words can also be subdivided into four groups: Skill, Ability, Responsibility, Influence. It might be supposed that these groups reflect the special qualities applicants may be willing to underline by using “fancy words” from these groups in their job titles.
It is interesting to note that the Russian language also has a trend to create “fancy” job titles, though it has no need for the use of such “fancy” words as wizard, geek, guru, hero and others. Instead, Russian “fancy” job titles use loanwords from the English language, e.g. manager instead of управляющий, provider instead of поставщик, dealer instead of торговец and many others.
The results of our research may be of interest to job seekers, human resources officials, as well as translators. The materials from our research can also be used in teaching/learning English, as our research covers a rather important trend in the modern English language.
