Leafy greens are the easiest plant to grow in any aquaponic system. Loose-leaf lettuces are ready for harvest in about 40 days (earlier for baby greens), and head lettuces are ready in about 90 days. Arugula, spinach, and mizuna are all better when harvested young, and they can all be planted close together.
Salad greens do well in cooler conditions, and they can tolerate partial shade. This is helpful for indoor systems, because lettuce thrives under artificial lighting, and can handle cool environments, like basements.
Lettuce and other greens can be planted very close together as long as there is enough lighting. You can either harvest entire heads, or, in smaller systems, you can plant loose-leaf varieties and harvest a few leaves at a time.

  • Herbs are the second easiest plants to grow in aquaponics. They are also one of the most popular for hobby businesses who sell to local restaurants.
Most herbs prefer full sun, and need their roots to dry out periodically, | which is why they perform best in flood-and-drain systems. In general, I

herbs with green, fleshy stems will do well in aquaponic systems. Herbs with brown, woody stems are more susceptible to root and stem rot.
Herbs that grow well in aquaponic systems are:
  • Basil
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Anise
  • Chives
  • Cilantro
  • Dill
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Lemon balm
  • Marjoram
  • Sage

  • Other herbs, like lavender, prefer drier growing conditions. They can be grown in an aquaponic system, but it will require more maintenance and monitoring to prevent rot.
    These herbs include:
  • Lavender
  • Tarragon

  • Rosemary
  • Chamomile
  • Echinacea

  • Mint grows exceptionally well in aquaponic systems, but it can quickly take over a grow bed. If you do want to grow mint, you should have a dedicated grow bed so it doesn't spread and choke out other plants.
