Sick/Stressed Fish
Dirty water, nutrient imbalances, and infested plants will result in stress for your fish. Stressed fish quickly become sick fish, and you can lose an entire fish tank if these issues are not addressed.
Signs that your fish are stressed include:

• Aggression
• Rubbing the sides of the tank
• Floating at the top of the tank (alive)
• Reduced appetite
• Reduced activity

If you notice your fish have changed their behavior, look back at your logs for temperature, water quality, and pH tests. Compare this with other issues your system may be having, such as root rot or aphids.
Adjust the temperature to the lower end of the ideal range for your species. Increase feeding rate to see how well they are eating, and increase aeration.
If this does not help, try removing fish to see if they respond to a lower stocking density. You should also clean out your solids filter and any buildup in your grow beds. You may also try a gradual change in fish feed to something more nutritious.
Maintaining an aquaponic system can be time-consuming, but it is also highly rewarding. Consistent testing, logging, and monitoring will help you anticipate and plan for potential issues. As you become more comfortable with your system, you will be able to tailor the

maintenance schedule to your setup, and produce high-quality, nutritious vegetables year-round.
Once you have a healthy operation, you can begin to experiment with different design modifications, fish species, and crop varieties. Aquaponics is still an experimental field of agriculture, and new designs are constantly improving efficiency and productivity.
