Shakespeare’s work reflected the new political and societal discussions beginning in London. Popular works such as “Arcadia” by Sir Philip Sidney and Essays by Michel de Montaigne influenced Shakespeare’s ideas [20, 2]. While many of his plays were written during the Elizabethan Age, Shakespeare’s later works were written in the dawn of the , which emphasized the questioning of the social order. He examined how his society functioned, how relationships were formed, and how religion influenced politics. For example, Hamlet was full of allusions to skepticism about love and religion [14, 67].
Shakespeare's influence has expanded from traditional literature and theatre to present-day movies, western philosophy and the English language [21, 44]. He is known as one of the best English-language writers and has introduced innovative ideas to novels, plays, dramas and even changed how the world of poetry [13, 40].
Herman Melville was one of the most original and daring writers of nineteenth-century American literature. Together with his friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne, they helped to infuse American literature with its own unique character, looking to American experience and sensibility and breaking with European social realism. Melville's complex allegorical writings were ground-breaking explorations of eternal questions that expanded the scope of the novel as method of artistic and philosophical inquiry.

There are many reasons why Herman Melville is considered one of the most decorated literary authors of his time. Melville learned to work from a young age when his father passed away shortly after going bankrupt in the fur business(“American Experience”). Lastly, Herman’s life impacted his novel, Moby Dick because the tragic ending in which the main character is the only sailor of the entire crew that escapes the attack of the whale they are attempting to catch. He ends up staying afloat on his best friend’s coffin after the ship is sunk and the mission failed (Herman Melville). This reflects Melville’s life at the time because he wrote Moby Dick during the pivotal period of his life when he was going unrecognized for his work and his financial and family life was taking a turn for the worst.
