Kanban as a team management method – essential aspects of the method 
Kanban

is a production management method. It was developed in Japan in the 1950s. The term kanban was 
first used by Taiichi Ohno. The word Kaban comes from Japanese and means a sheet of paper (Japanese Kan – "visible 
description", Ban – a sheet of paper) [1].
The kanban method reflects the process visualization. A physical or virtual kanban board is the most popular 
tool facilitating presentation of the most important stages of work. In practice, it comes down to three columns: To Do, 
In Progress, Done [4]. 
The widespread use of this method in management was brought about by Toyota's insufficient productivity and 
efficiency, when compared to American automotive rivals. Toyota's use of Kaban allowed the company to achieve a 
flexible and effective just-in-time (live) production control system. This increased productivity while reduced costly 
inventories of raw materials and finished semi-finished products. 
The ideas of Kanban are summed up by six principles (Table 9) of this concept (Table 10) and the Kaban idea 
of – the “7 x nos’ [24]: 
1) no defects, 
2) no delays, 
3) no stocks, 
4) no queues – anywhere and for anything, 
5) no idle time, 
6) no unnecessary technological and control operations, 
7) no movements.

The basis of Kanban techniques are forms. They are completed in the following order: 
1) A dispatcher in a production department (on a basis of data on the forecast demand for a given item) fills in 
the planning part of the kanban card and passes it to the production department. 
2) A planner in a production department prepares an appropriate production order for a batch of items 
(including specifying contractors and allocating resources necessary to perform the task). They fill in the next part of 
the card. 
3) After the end of production and the quality acceptance of a batch, a contractor detaches one part of the card 
and hands it over to the planner (it is a proof of the order completion). The remaining two parts of the card are placed in 
a container with finished items (they are transported to the department from which the orders came). 
4) At the moment when an employee tears off the second part of the kanban card, they start using the 
delivered item. The kanban card is handed over to the production department dispatcher. The dispatcher is informed that 
the new stock is already in use. 
5) The third part of the kanban card is handed over to the dispatcher when the stock of the item is exhausted.
