LOTMAN’S SEMIOTICS OF HISTORY:
BETWEEN REALISM AND CONSTRUCTIVISM
The article analyzes the interpretation of historical knowledge in the
semiotics of Lotman's culture. Attention is paid to the semiotic interpretation
of the concept of “historical fact”. The article explores the meaning of Lot-
man’s semiotics of culture in the context of the non-classical philosophy of
history and the theory of historical writing of the 20th century. It is shown
that the interpretation of key concepts of the theory of historiography (his-
torical fact, historical process, historical reality) proposed by Lotman over-
comes the extremes of objectivism and relativism in the understanding of the
historical past.
Key words: semiotics of history, semiotics of culture, Moscow-Tartu
school, Lotman, semiosphere, constructivism, narrativism, historical fact.
