B. The advantages of written communication
In contrast to verbal communication, written communication provides several distinct advantages. First
and foremost, written communication allows for more careful consideration and editing of ideas. This
means that written messages tend to be clearer and more effective at conveying complex information
than spoken messages. Additionally, written communication provides a permanent record of the com-
munication that has taken place. This can be useful for ensuring accountability, facilitating reference and
review, and avoiding misunderstandings that can arise from a lack of clear documentation. Finally, written
communication often allows for broader distribution of information, whether it be through physical copies
or digital channels, enabling messages to reach a wider audience. Overall, the advantages of written
communication are numerous and make it a valuable tool for effective and efficient communication.
C. The disadvantages of written communication
Written communication has its own set of disadvantages that cannot be ignored. One of the major draw-
backs of written communication is the inability to convey emotions and gestures. Written communication
is often considered a very formal and rigid mode of communication and can be easily misinterpreted.
This is because written communication lacks the visual and tonal cues present in oral communication
that help to convey the meaning and emotions behind the message. Additionally, written communication
often requires a lot of time and effort, especially in situations where the message needs to be very precise
and accurate. Another disadvantage of written communication is the potential for miscommunication due
to language barriers or differences in cultural understanding. This can lead to misunderstandings and
confusion among individuals from different backgrounds. Overall, while written communication has its
advantages, it is important to recognize its limitations and use it judiciously.
Furthermore, communication has several other sources which are deemed significant today. In addition
to verbal and written communication, visual communication has become a strong tool that significantly
affects social life and culture. Social media platforms and mobile phone messaging applications provide
people with an easier and more accessible way of visual communication. It allows users to share pictures,
videos, and emoticons to convey messages. Also, the use of nonverbal communication such as facial
expressions, gestures, and posture can help individuals deliver their messages more effectively and
accurately. Nonverbal communication helps set the tone of the conversation, establish relationships,
and communicate emotions. Indeed, nonverbal communication is critical in interpreting the underlying
meaning of oral and written communication, primarily because it is difficult to express certain feelings
and emotions through verbal and written means alone. As such, people need to thoroughly understand
the power and significance of nonverbal communication, especially in understanding and building
relationships with others.
