Transport and Utilities

  • Drinking Water: Most areas in Khorezm, except urban areas, do not have access to centralized drinking water. Vital to supply potable water to remote areas where many tourist attractions are located.
  • Electricity Supply: Rural areas face constant power cuts, especially in harsh climatic conditions. Alternative sources of electricity supply need to be introduced.
  • Sanitary/Hygenic Units: There is a necessity to organize sanitary and hygienic units at tourist sites in the region. Visitors either experience a lack of public sanitary facilities or existing units are unhygienic.
  • WiFi/Internet: Tourist facilities and public places need to have public Wi-Fi spots.
  • Public Transport Services: There is poor public transport access to Urgench International Airport, and a lack of information about transport services throughout the region.
  • Flight Services: The number of flights need to be increased from Uzbekistan’s regions, as well as international flights.
  • Railway Services: Railway access into Khorezm and South Karakalpakstan experiences high demand and more coaches need to be added to services, prior to the introduction of high speed railway services in the next five years.

Economic Impact

  • Sectoral Share of GDP: Agriculture at 38.7% of total growth, industry at 15.7%, construction at 6.8% and services, including tourism, at 38.8% for 2022.
  • Tourism-related Businesses: In 2021, there were 8, with 62.5% of them located in Urgench, 25% in Khiva, and 12.5% in the district of Yangarik. They served 236,400 visitors in 2021, of which 98.3% were Uzbek citizens.
  • Tourism export growth: This amounts to US$27.5million earned, with 140% growth over the last 7 years. From neighbouring countries, the contribution comprises US$5.4million.
  • Hotel Accommodation: As of 2022, there were 69 accommodation establishments, of which 52 were hotels and 17 other lodging facilities. In addition, there were 96 family guest houses, homestays and hostels.
  • Tourism Employment: In 2022, there were 4240 people employed in the tourism sector in the Khorezm region (with a regional unemployment rate of 8%), of which 225 were tour guides, 65 were tour operators and two travel agents.
  • Tourism Investment: Tourism and hospitality development projects are planned to increase from a current 34 projects to 49 by 2026. In addition, there are 154 investment projects that are part of the PPP Development Agency's portfolio during 2022–2026.
