SEMINAR 15 : Translation problems in Phraseology
Topic for discussion:

  • The basic problems of translation as a science

  • Specific features of phraseological units complicating their adequate translation

  • Translation strategies and techniques in phraseology

  • Notions of equivalents, analogues, clichés, translation loans, etc.

  • False friends of translators

  • Translation of idiomatic, ideophaseomatic and phraseomatic expressions

Task 1: Answer the following question



  1. What do we call a language from which we translate texts? To which we translate the text? A language from which we translate texts is called Source Language and to another language is called Target Language

  2. What problems facing a translator do you know? They face difficulties in finding proper equivalent of some of the SL items

  3. Which aspect of the translation of idioms is the most problematic? The transference of phraseological units, particularly, idioms, semi-idioms, phrasal verbs, proverbs and sayings

  4. What do you understand as “adequacy” of translation and how can this be reached? The adequacy stands for the correspondence of the target text to the source text, including the expressive means in translation.

  5. Why are PhUs called ‘frozen patterns of language’? because the components of PhUs are stable and cannot be deduced the meaning from its components

  6. What are basic techniques for translation of idioms?



Task 2: What types of phraseological meaning do the following PhUs express?
To pig out, wet behind the ears, a good wife and health are man’s best wealth, to pay a compliment, mare’s nest, blow one’s own trumpet, to spill the tea, hen party, Hobson’s choice, to go out with, no pain no gain, neither fish nor fowl, to bring home the bacon, to be between two fires, foul language, white lie, let sleeping dogs lie, as thick as thieves, by hook or by crook, call names, to lose one’s head
