East Germanic Languages group

• Gothic language was preserved in written records of the 4th-6th centuries

In 4th century a West Gothic Bishop Ulfila translated the Bible from Greek into Gothic language

• Parts of Ulfila’s translations are preserved and are kept now in Uppsala, Sweden
• These gospels were written on the red Parchmenr with gold and silver letters. They are known as SILVER CODEX (CODEX ARGENTIUS)

East Germanic Languages group

• SILVER CODEX is one of the earliest texts in the languages of Germanic group
• The other East Germanic languages have left no written traces, but some tribal names have survived in place-names:
• Bornholm and Burgundy- from tribe of Burgundians,
• Andalusia – Vandals
• Lombardy - Langoboards
