ANNOTATION 
It is well known that the East, with its unique literature and culture, had a significant impact 
on the European literary environment and made a huge contribution to the development of science, 
art and literature. The founders of the Romantic movement, which emerged in 18th century English 
literature, also based their works on oriental fairy tales and legends, depicting the imaginary world of 
the East, its nature, customs, mythology, historical place and personalities. 
This article discusses a number of factors, such as the contribution of the Arabian tales A 
Thousand and One Nights to the foundations of the Romantic period in European, especially English, 
literature. Originally translated from Arabic into French, tales A Thousand and One Nights marked a 
turning point in European literature. The romantic movements that began in France spread throughout 
England, and the melody of the tales of the peoples of the East gave an unprecedented high inspiration 
to English writers. Their growing interest in the Eastern world led them to study the geography, 
nature, customs and traditions, historical figures and national values of the eastern countries through 
various sources. As a result, the creators wrote new works in a romantic spirit. In England, in the late 
18th century, the poets of the Lake School, Southey, Coleridge and Wordsworth, laid the foundations 
of the Romantic period in English literature with their poems rich in oriental features.
