IR final task 1&3
john a. agnew
John A. Agnew is a political geographer who has made significant contributions to the field of geography and international relations. His work on the theory of place and space in political geography, IR, and geopolitics has the following main postulates: State Territoriality: Agnew argues that the concept of state territoriality is central to the study of place and space in political geography and IR. According to him, the state has a monopoly over the use of physical space within its borders and exercises this control through various means, including laws, regulations, and the use of force. Place and Space as Social Constructions: Agnew contends that place and space are not fixed and objective realities, but rather social constructions that are shaped by human perceptions, beliefs, and values. Geopolitical Imagination: Agnew emphasizes the role of geopolitical imagination in shaping the relationships between states and the territories they occupy. He argues that the geopolitical imagination of states and individuals helps to construct and reinforce the boundaries between states, and that this imagination can influence state behavior and the development of foreign policies. Illustrations: The Israeli-Palestinian conflict: The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a prime example of how state territoriality, place, and space are intertwined in political geography and IR. The conflict is rooted in the competing territorial claims of the two states, and the struggle for control over physical space and resources. The Kurdish question in Iraq: The Kurdish question in Iraq is a case in point of how the geopolitical imagination can shape state behavior and territorial claims. The Kurdish minority in Iraq has long sought greater autonomy and independence, and the geopolitical imagination of the Iraqi state and the Kurdish population has been an important factor in shaping the conflict and the territorial claims of both sides. The partition of India: The partition of India in 1947 was a result of competing territorial claims and geopolitical imaginations of Hindu and Muslim communities in the region. The partition created two new independent states, India and Pakistan, and reshaped the territorial boundaries and the geopolitical imaginations of the region. Download 389.66 Kb.
