Problem Solvers This task-based activity can be adapted to almost any topic. As the teacher, you can come up with a plethora of problems to present the students with. Use Authentic material such as news articles or video to support you in this lesson. For example, you could show a traffic problem that occurs in the city that your students live in. Tell them that they are part of a special committee responsible for brainstorming solutions and deciding on the one that best works for everyone in the community. Be sure that each group comes up with multiple solutions before presenting the best one to the class. Simple, go-to responses should not be accepted- you really want to push them to brainstorm, listen to each others’ ideas, and evaluate pros and cons.

29. Summary. Background. Content-Based Instruction (CBI) refers to an approach to second language teaching in which teaching is organized around the content or information that students will acquire, rather than around a linguistic or other type of syllabus.
The focus of a CBI lesson is on the topic or subject matter. During the lesson students are focused on learning about something. This could be anything that interests them from a serious science subject to their favourite pop star or even a topical news story or film.
A law banning all political speeches in a public park would be content based; a law banning only political speeches by members of the Socialist Party would be viewpoint based.
Example: Students are learning about food nutrition. For a class activity, they will make a meal to enjoy together. They use English to discuss kitchen supplies needed as well as cooking methods to prepare their meal. Then the class will head to the kitchen and start cooking!

Project-based learning (PBL) or project-based instruction is an instructional approach designed to give students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills through engaging projects set around challenges and problems they may face in the real world. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.
