Topic: Compare and contrast paragraph writing

Materials: Activities, handouts
Objectives:

  • To improve students’ writing skills;

  • To give learners an opportunity to practice compare and contrast paragraph writing during the lesson;

  • To raise the awareness of students of effective writing skills;

  • To improve the students’ knowledge about the difference between compare and contrast.

Lesson stages:

  1. Beginning of the lesson - Pre-stage

    1. Warm up activity

  2. Main part of the lesson – While-stage

    1. Working with handouts

    2. Activity one

    3. Activity two

The beginning of the lesson
Pre-stage (10 min)
Greeting (2 min)
Lead-in (3 min)
Ask the students the following questions:

  1. Are there any differences between compare and contrast?

  2. What kind of differences are they?

Warm up activity (5 min): Similarities and differences
Procedure:
Define and write four differences and four similarities of these two cars. Write about eight sentences.

Main part of the lesson
While-stage (30 min)
Working with handouts (15 min)
Procedure:
Distribute handouts about compare and contrast paragraph writing (compare and contrast structures and paragraph organizations) and discuss them with learners. In the process of discussing do the exercises given after the explanations.
