The third constraint is that the pattern CVVC is restricted; it is the result of germination (ibid.). Following Haywood and Nahmad (1982: 12), there are two kinds of syllable in Arabic: short and long. The short syllable consists of a consonant with a short vowel, like the three syllables in ةتك kataba (wrote). In this word, the three syllables should be equal and even. The long syllable consists of a vowelled consonant followed by unvowelled letter. This may be either a consonant with vowel followed by a long vowel as in the first syllable of ةتاك kataba (write) or the second syllable of ريثك kabirun (big); or a vowelled consonant followed by a truly consonantal second letter with sukun as in the first syllable of هثلك kalbuhu (his dog). Thus, the word متثتك katabtum (you (plural) wrote) is one short syllable followed by two long. باتك kitabun (a book) is one short syllable followed by two long. No syllable can begin with an unvowelled letter. Consequently, no word may begin with two consonants unless a vowel intervenes. This explains why certain verb forms begin with an extra alif with hamzatulwasl as ملتسا istalama (received). No syllable should close with two unvowelled consonants except at the end of a sentence. Thus, ةلق qalbun (heart) could be read ةلق qalb (heart) without the case-ending in pause (ibid. 13). For Khalil (1999: 25), Arabic syllable structure may be expressed by the following formula: CV(V)(C)(C).The following syllable types are admissible in Arabic: CV as in ب bi (with), CVV as in يف fii (in), CVC as in بأ ab (father), CVVC as in ليف fiil (elephant), CVCC as in رهن (river), and CVVCC as in داج jaadd (serious). The last type is rare and must contain long /aa/ followed by a geminate cluster (ibid.). 3. Conclusions 1. English and Arabic treat the syllable as a basic unit of organization for a sequence of speech sounds. 2. In English, syllables ending with vowels are called open syllables and those ending with consonants are called closed syllables. The same applies to Arabic with the former type called maftuh and the latter muqfal. 3. The syllable in English has a hierarchical structure of an onset (consonant(s)) and a rhyme which in turn consists of the nucleus (a vowel or a syllabic consonant (/m, n, l, r, ŋ/) and a coda (consonant(s)). Arabic, on the other hand, treats the syllable as an ordered symmetry of analytic units with |
