Question 5 Amplification (Module 1)

Learning Objective: Module 1: 3.1
Course material reference: Module 1 Lesson 24

Question:
Explain the types and features of standard punctuation, including:
i) Full stop
ii) Comma
iii) Question mark
iv) Semi-colon
v) Hyphen
vi) Brackets

Amplification: The types of punctuation marks that we recommend that you discuss are named in the question itself. To explain the features of each punctuation mark, simply explain what it does in a sentence (i.e. how does it affect a sentence, what it is used for) and perhaps give a short example for each to help you illustrate your point.

  1. Full stop is the punctuation mark that is used when the sentence is finished.

Example: Malala goes to the library every day.

  1. Comma is the punctuation mark that is used to separate the sentences, ideas, categories of the words in the sentence and especially with before conjunctions.

Example: Malala goes to the library every day, so that there only she meets her friends.

  1. Question mark is the punctuation mark that is used at the end of question.

Example: Where does Malala meet with her friends?

  1. Semi-colon is used between two independent clauses.

Example: Malala goes to the library every day; there she meets lots of her friends.

  1. Hyphen – is used to join words with a combined meaning.

Example: Run-down, foreign-film

  1. Brackets are used when there can be added extra information to the sentence.

Example : My teacher ( Marya Ivanovna) was really smart and kind woman.
