It  is  often  believed  that  videogames  can  be  considered  as  a  harmless 

pastime activity and even benefit educationally, while others argue that 

people who are engaged in playing various video games are negatively 

affected  by  them.  I  tend  to  think  that  negatives  associated  with  video 

games far outbalance the positives. 

One advantage associated with games is that they can be an enjoyable 

spare time activity with friends. It is no secret that most teenagers and 

children play online shooter or strategy games with their peers and in-

teract  through  the  virtual  world  using  different  platforms.  Not  only 

this,  people  can  learn  and  even  enhance  some  of  their  real  life  skills 

through games. This is because developers and game programmers in-

clude  real  life  situations  and  objects  in  most  games.  To  illustrate,  it  is 

possible  to  learn  about  Second  World  War  episodes  by  playing 

“Brothers  in  Arms”  shooter  game  in  which  Soviet  and  American  sol-

diers destroy German forces and free regions and cities of those coun-

tries in war.  

However, one can think of adverse impacts of videogames played in ex-

cess. More often than not, gamers become addicted to a particular game 

and waste most of their time and resources on this. They gradually for-

get about their real life duties and responsibilities which might result in 

family  problems,  educational  problems  and  major  failures.  Moreover, 

most  of  the  video  games  contain  violence  and  horror  to  some  extent 

which  are  the  main  reasons  why  many  teenagers  and  adolescents  be-

come aggressive nowadays. Their social behavior changes in a negative 

way and many of them are likely to commit crimes. 

In conclusion, games that can be played on different platforms might be 

regarded  as  harmless  tools  by  some  but  my  personal  view  is  that  we 

lose  more  than  we  get  by  wasting  our  time  in  front  of  our  computer 

screens and indulging in our favourite games.
