THE CONCEPT OF TERM AND TERMINOLOGY AS AN OBJECT OF LINGUISTIC RESEARCH

According to A.A.Reformatsky, a term is always a member of a terminological group and its meaning is clearly understood. The terminological field replaces its context. In its terminological field, a term-word acquires clarity and unambiguity, and beyond its boundaries, it loses its term character.
Following elements that are typical features of the term from a linguistic point of view:
1) a term is a word or phrase;
2) a given word or phrase has a special meaning;
3) a clear definition of this meaning requires definition within a certain system of concepts;
4) any word or phrase understood as “term” means a professional, special concept.

At first, terminology was considered a part of lexicology, but this discipline was recognized as a separate discipline after the Australian scientist O. Wyuster devoted his doctoral dissertation to lexical units in technical language in 1931. He was the founder of the first terminology school, after which his student H. Felber continued his work. H. Felber is the author of the world’s first international training manual on terminology.
