Get in touch with 
your creative side
Arts programs provide an opportunity for you 
to explore and develop new and existing skills, 
an appreciation for the arts and to cultivate 
your imagination. A wide range of recreational 
arts programs are offered for every age group 
including – visual arts, music, dance, performing 
arts, crafts and workshops.  
Integration Services may be requested if an 
individual requires assistance to participate 
in recreation programs. Refer to the Adapted 
Recreation Programs and Integration Services 
section or visit toronto.ca/accessibility.
Some arts programs may have an additional 
fee for materials. Contact the program 
location directly for specific details.
Programming Descriptions
Crafts 
There is an incredible variety of craft classes to 
be experienced.  The majority of craft classes 
require no previous experience, simply a desire to 
learn, socialize and have fun.  Each location has 
its own instructors that provide expert guidance 
and direction in a given craft.  Participants may 
be expected to provide some and/or all required 
materials.
Dance
Dance programs offer a variety of styles for all 
ages and skill levels.  Choose from traditional 
dances such as jazz, ballet, hip hop and line 
dance or non-traditional dances such as Salsa and 
Latin to name a few.  Beginner classes will allow 
participants to learn introductory dance steps.  
Advanced classes have participants who have 
already mastered the basic dance steps and now 
want to learn more challenging steps to enhance 
their skills and technique. Instructors can assist 
you in determining your dance level.  Culturally 
specific dance programs are open to participants 
of all levels of ability. 
Performing Arts
Performing arts programs offer participants an 
opportunity to learn performing techniques in a 
group setting.  Registrants will learn through a 
variety of exercises and class situations how to 
control stage fright, build confidence and voice 
projection. 
Music
Our instructional music programs introduce 
participants to basic theories that include reading 
musical notation and keeping time.  Registered 
participants will be able to choose instruction 
in a variety of instruments, including; guitar, 
piano, drums, vocal and more. Students may be 
expected to bring their own instruments where 
indicated.  Our beginner music classes use basic 
approaches that are appropriate for all ages. 
Drop-in programs require participants to bring 
their own instruments and a minimum of beginner 
experience.  These students continue to improve 
their skills and work on more challenging pieces of 
music.
Visual Arts
Visual arts programs offer the participant of any 
skill level an opportunity to learn new techniques 
or mediums. These classes provide the necessary 
foundation of skills that will assist the participant to 
progress to use colour or more advanced drawing 
techniques. Basic art classes introduce the artist 
to a variety of forms such as acrylic, watercolour, 
traditional oils to conte, pencil crayon and pastels. 
Workshops
The City provides many opportunities to 
experience seasonal, holiday or special interest 
workshops for all ages and abilities. Some 
workshops are short and last only a couple of 
hours, while others require a few days to complete.  
Workshops generally focus on a certain theme 
and the participants leave the program with a 
completed project.   Participants may be expected 
to provide some and/or all required materials.

Parks, Forestry and Recreation is committed 
to providing high-quality recreation programs 
for children 0 to 5 years of age.  
Early Years programming provides a creative, 
fun and safe place to introduce your child to 
recreation activities while building friendships 
and developing physical, social and creative 
skills.  For specific program activities, refer to 
the descriptions.

Program Information
Parks, Forestry and Recreation offers exciting 
Early Years recreation programs that align with the 
regulations under the Child Care and Early Years Act. 
 
•  The Act defines program age requirements 
for children age 5 years and under.
 
•  Your child must reach the specified age of 
the program by the first day of class.
 
•  Programs for children under 3 years of age 
are required to have a caregiver attend the 
program.
Programs with a Parent/Caregiver
Registered programs are intended solely for the 
individual client that is registered in the program. 
Programs “with caregiver” require a parent or 
caregiver of at least 14 years of age to directly 
supervise the participant that is registered and 
actively participate in the program. Additional 
children are not permitted to attend unless also 
registered with appropriate caregiver present.
All Other Programs
Children develop independently through active play 
and structured, instructor supervised activities. 
Parents or caregivers do not attend these programs.  
Washroom Guidelines
Programs without a parent/caregiver are intended 
for children who are toilet trained. To ensure your 
child’s successful participation in the program: 
 
•  Encourage your child to use the washroom 
before the program begins. 
 
•  Tell staff about any special toileting routines 
or signs your child uses when they need to 
use the washroom. 
 
•  Pull up training pants are acceptable in the 
program. (Staff cannot change diapers.) 
 
•  If your child requires a special needs 
support worker to help with personal care, 
please notify your Community Recreation 
Programmer.
Food Allergies and Restrictions
The City of Toronto and its staff cannot guarantee the 
contents or ingredients in foods or supplies within 
programs. If your child has a food allergy or restriction 
you must notify staff at your program location.
Pariticipant Pick-up
Participants are expected to be picked up at the 
end of Early Years Instructional Programs without 
Caregivers.  Participants who are picked up late will 
have a fee of $1 for each minute late applied to their 
program registration account.

Drop-In Play 
Recreation Fun and Play with Caregiver
This drop-in program provides a safe place for 
children to participate in a variety of supervised, 
unstructured recreational activities.  Through active 
play, children will explore fundamental movement, 
fine, and gross motor skills. A Caregiver must 
accompany the child. Staff supervise, facilitate and 
organize activities but do not instruct in this program. 
Drop-in programs do not require pre-registration.
Fitness
Fitness
Instruction and skill development in a specific 
fitness activity.
Yoga (please bring your own mat)
Gentle exercises promoting flexibility, proper 
breathing and relaxation, while strengthening and 
toning the muscles.
General Interest
Around The Garden 
Learn the basics of gardening, composting, 
recycling, insects and plants.
Building Fun
Explore building activities through ongoing projects 
while constructing various objects using tools and 
materials.
Creative Chefs
This cooking program lets children explore and be 
creative with food while learning etiquette, food 
groups, and healthy food choices.
Geography Fun
Learn about the world through the people, places 
and cultures that make up your community and this 
diverse city.
Little Engineers
Learn the foundations of engineering design, 
weights and measures, and physics. 
Little Explorers
Learn about your community, city, country, world 
and universe by exploring maps, landmarks and 
cultures through themed crafts, stories, and 
activities.  You will learn how to use a compass, 
map your community and understand legends and 
symbols to explore various countries and their 
cultures throughout the world.  
Little Farmers
Discover farm animal life through crafts and 
activities while visiting a farm environment.
Recreation Adventures
This is an introductory instructional program that 
introduces children to basic active play to develop 
physical literacy. Through a variety of activities in 
a social and fun recreational environment, children 
will develop fundamental movement (e.g. run, 
jump, skip, hop) and creative skills. Children will 
participate in activities including: theme-based 
physical activities, games, arts and crafts, and 
unstructured play.  A Caregiver does not need to 
attend. Staff provide supervision and instruction.

include chemical reactions, flight dynamics, cellular 
mechanics, and the inner working of the human body.

An introduction to cooking and baking.
Story Time
An introduction to a variety of children’s stories, 
incorporating crafts and dramatic play.
Music
Making Music
Make music in a group setting with some basic 
instruments, props and singing.  
Orchestra Discovery
Create your own instruments and discover how they 
work together to create sounds, rhythm and music.
Sports
Gymnastics 
Gymnastics builds strong minds, strong bodies and 
is an excellent foundation for many sports.  The 
City of Toronto offers multiple levels of introductory 
gymnastics instruction. Visit toronto.ca/parks for 
information on gymnastics programs available.
Individual Sport (i.e. Ball Hockey/
Basketball/Martial Arts/Soccer/Tennis)
Basic introduction to a specific sport with an 
emphasis on developing skills, team work and fair 
play in a non-competitive environment.

Physical Literacy
Children need to learn how to throw a ball before 
they can throw out the first pitch. Ready, Set, 
PLAY! programs introduce children to the basics 
of moving confidently and competently in a fun 
and active environment that will help prepare 
them for participation in a variety of sports and 
activities.  Children will learn the fundamentals of 
a wide range of physical activities including rolling, 
swinging, running, skipping, jumping, balancing, 
dribbling, throwing, catching, kicking and more.  
Starting out here is the first step towards a lifetime 
of fun and activity.

A variety of programs for all ages to explore your 
hidden talents. Join a club, take a computer 
course, get in on a game of cards, or watch a 
movie with your family and socialize with peers.

Program Descriptions
Cards and Games
There are a wide variety of cards and games 
programs offered where participants can socialize 
while taking part in a fun activity. Participants can  
learn a new skill in an instructional program, or come  
to a drop-in program where no formal instruction is 
provided and participants can join at any time.
Clubs
Participants are given the opportunity to interact 
and make new friends while participating in 
supervised activities. Clubs can be focussed 
around an activity or interest, such as books or 
games, or may be designed for the interests of a 
particular age group or gender. There is no formal 
instruction and participants can join at any time.
Computers
Participants of various skill levels will develop their 
knowledge of computers and programs through 
instruction. Programs may focus on specific topics 
such as emails, video game and web design and 
may be designed for different skill levels such as 
beginner, intermediate or advanced. There are also 
drop-in computer labs for you to access various 
computer programs and the internet – no formal 
instruction is provided.
Cooking
Cooking programs teach participants the basics 
of how to measure and combine ingredients while 
making delicious recipes. There is a variety of 
interest-specific cooking courses available that 
focus on a particular technique such as baking or 
recipes from a specific culture. 
First Aid
A variety of First Aid courses are offered throughout 
the city, visit toronto.ca/swim and click on the 
Aquatic Leadership section for more information.
Games/Movies
Participants take part in various games and 
activities each week, including occasional movies.  
There is no formal instruction and participants can 
join at any time.
Gardening
Child and youth gardening programs focus on 
exploring nature, weather, how things grow as 
well as some of the insects and animals involved.  
Program may include outdoor components.  
Adult programs focus on progression of gardening 
skills beyond basic, or provide instruction in a 
specific gardening discipline (such as balcony 
gardening, raised bed gardening etc.). Program 
may include outdoor components.  
Geography
Children will explore the local community through 
projects, games and activities.  
In specialized programs, children will learn about 
their community, city, country and world by 
exploring maps, landmarks and cultures through 
themed projects, games and activities.  
Language
Beginner language programs introduce participants 
to the basics of language, grammar, vocabulary, 
reading, writing, conversation and real-life daily 
situations. Intermediate and advanced programs 
continue to explore vocabulary, grammar, reading 
and writing skills in more depth. The focus is 
conversational.  
Nature
Children will have opportunities to do hands-on 
exploration of the environment through projects, 
games and activities. Program may include 
outdoor components.  
Science
Children will explore basic science knowledge and 
conduct fun and exciting experiments.  
In specialized programs, children will learn 
scientific theories, develop skills beyond basics, 
and apply knowledge to conduct experiments. 
Other Programs
General interest spans a wide variety of activities 
and interests where participants may interact and 
socialize with others through workshops, special 
events or trips/outings. These programs may be 
offered one-time, half day, full day and may involve 
travel to off-site locations.

Find Your Sport!
Parks, Forestry and Recreation offers a progressive 
introduction to sport through a variety of beginner 
to advanced introductory level programs.

Start to PLAY! programs introduce younger 
participants to the fun of sport through activities 
and games that will help them develop sport-
specific skills

PLAY! programs are for participants from 6 to 12 
years of age and introduce basic sport-specific 
skills in a fun environment that focuses on 
individual development and team work through 
activities and mini-games.

SKILLS! programs are for participants from 6 to 
12 years of age who have some sport experience 
and would like to learn more about technical 
skills, practice, and game strategy through drills, 
activities, and scrimmages.

GAME! programs are designed for youth, adults, 
and older adults who are interested in learning a 
new sport at the recreational level or would like 
to brush up on their skills.
