depending on the questions asked. Some opinion polls
that ask the same questions of consumers in the EU
and the United States indicate
that EU consumers are
more concerned than U.S. consumers (
Environics,
1999,
The Economist, 2000). A later Angus Reid poll
indicates that there are differences
on some issues but
not on others. As noted above, actual market behavior
sometimes gives a more
accurate picture of consumer
preferences. In both the EU and the United States,
some demand for foods that are free of biotech ingre-
dients exists.
In the United States, fewer such foods
exist, and are generally sold by smaller, “natural
foods” stores, although 100
percent organic products
do not contain biotech ingredients. By contrast, in the
EU, food containing biotech ingredients must be
labeled, and most large
supermarket chains have
attempted to eliminate biotech ingredients from their
food products.
