Activity 3 Write the letters. (It is on the right page of the book)
Objectives: to learn two letters of the alphabet – Uu and Vv; to practice writing the letters; to consolidate the letters. Ask the pupils to look at the letter “Uu” and say what pictures are next to the letter (umbrella, cucumber, pumpkin and preposition ‘under’). Play the DVD and ask the pupils to listen and repeat the letter and the corresponding pictures. Also draw their attention to the way the letters are written. Then ask the pupils to open their Workbooks and start writing the capital letter “U” and then small “u”. Ask them to look at the example and follow the arrows. If necessary, demonstrate on the blackboard. Then repeat the procedure with the letter “Vv”.
2. After the pupils have practised writing the letters for some time you can work on the pronunciation of the letters “U” and “V” as follows: STEP 1: Write the words “umbrella” and “under” and the sound [] under or over the letter “u” on the left side of the blackboard. Then write the word “cucumber” and the sound [ju:] under or over the letter “u” in the first syllable and the sound [] under or over the letter “u” in the second syllable on the right side of the blackboard. Then say that the letter “u” gives more than one sound. It is sometimes pronounced as [] like in the words on the left side of the blackboard and sometimes as [ju:] like the one in the word on the right side of the blackboard. After that have the pupils repeat these sounds and the words on the blackboard after you individually, in rows and chorus.
