Personal Computers There is a range of sizes and types of computer. Those 
designed for use by one person at a time are known as personal computers

computers (for use on an office desk) and handheld computers that can be 
carried around by the user 
Printer A printer is an output device that prints paper documents. This 
includes text documents, images, or a combination of both. The two most 
common types of printers are inkjet and laser printers. Inkjet printers are 
commonly used by consumers, while laser printers are a typical choice for 
businesses. Dot matrix printers, which have become increasingly rare, are still 
used for basic text printing. The printed output produced by a printer is often 
called a hard copy, which is the physical version of an electronic document. 
While some printers can only print black and white hard copies, most printers 
today can produce color prints. In fact, many home printers can now produce 
high-quality photo prints that rival professionally developed photos.  
Computer A computer is a device that processes data according to a set of 
instructions known as a program. The equipment is known as the hardware 
and the programs and data are the software. A special set of programs, called an 
operating system, provides an interface for the user and allows applications 
programs to communicate with the hardware. Common applications programs 
include word processors for creating and editing texts, spreadsheets for 
calculating mathematical formulae and databases for storing data in a way that 
allows the data to be sorted and searched. 
CD-ROM Compact Disc - Read Only Memory. An optical storage 
technology that stores and plays back data. "Read only" means the information 
on the disc may be capable of being displayed or used but not deleted. CD-
ROMs are commonly used for encyclopedias, dictionaries, and software 
libraries and they are also used for multimedia applications. Most computers 
now have a CD-ROM drive. Don't sound hopelessly out of touch with 
technology-be sure to use the term "CD-ROM" to refer to the technology or the 
discs, but not to the hardware you play the discs on; that's a "CD-ROM drive." 
Download This is the process in which data is sent to your computer. 
Whenever you receive information from the Internet, you are downloading it to 
your computer. For example, you might have to download an upgrade for your 
computer's operating system in order to play a new game (especially if you're 
using Windows). The opposite of this process, sending information to another 
computer, is called uploading.
